DESCRIPTION

The Samurai sword played a key role for the Japanese armed forces in WWII.

The Japanese were the only modern armed forces in recent history to issue a sword as part of their standard fighting equipment. Some of the blades were old and were handed down the family line. Other soldiers preferred to order a brand new blade. Another option was to simply accept a Showato (machine made blade) issued by the government.

In all cases the blades were fitted in standard military attire.

Most likely brought back as a war souvenir. The sword offered for sale here is a fine example of the sword employed by the Japanese soldier's in WWII. Items like this were acquired in the battlefield or after the soldier's surrendered their weapons at the end of the war.

Featured extensively in movies, TV shows, books, comic books, etc. The Samurai sword is one of the most recognizable icons of WWII and beyond. The sword featured here for sale provides you the opportunity to own one of these interesting and revered pieces of history.

THE SWORD
This is a hand made Katana Samurai sword. Known as a Gendaito. In overall very good condition. The sword is dressed in WWII attire. The scabbard retains nearly all of the original paint. A small section of orange paint is found near the bottom. The drag remains in place. No screws are missing. The handle remains tightly wrapped with the original wrapping. The traditional WWII three cherry blossom Menuki is present on both sides of the handle.

THE SIGNATURE
Dated 1938. Sword smith signed: Kanekuni

THE COMPONENTS
The sword is outfitted with an earlier production Tsuba. Cut-out center design. An interesting thing to note about this blade is that a Seki stamp has been placed in the tang. This is a characteristic normally associated with machine made blades (Showato). However, this is clearly and without question a good quality hand made (Gendaito) blade.

THE BLADE
The blade is in very good condition. No major nicks along the edge. Very nice and a lot of activity on the Hamon. No openings. The overall length of the blade is approximately 26 1/4 inches.
